Illinois Withholding Tax

Withholding tax is a government requirement for the payer of an item of income to withhold or deduct tax from the payment, and pay that tax to the government. In most situations, withholding tax applies to employment income.  Withholding Tax can also be applied to interest and dividend payments, IRA distributions and even salesof real estate.

Illinois employers are require to withhold Illinois Income Tax from employee compensation paid in Illinois.  Generally payers (employers) are required to withhold tax for

  • employee compensation (i.e., wages and salaries) paid in Illinois,
  • gambling or lottery winnings in Illinois paid to an Illinois resident, or
  • unemployment paid to an Illinois resident who has asked to have Illinois taxes withheld.

When to File and Deadlines for Illinois Withholding Tax Return

Generally, Illinois Withholding Tax returns have to be filed quarterly (every 3 months) ending in March 31 (Q1), June 30 (Q2), September 30 (Q3) and December 31 (Q4). Typically, the deadline to mail Illinois Withholding Tax return is the last day of the following month.

However, payments are usually require monthly.  Taxpayers who have been registered less than 18 months are assigned to the monthly payment and quarterly return schedule.
